Kate Vrijmoet is a Chicago-based conceptual artist and MFA whose work most commonly features the human figure. She uses foundational concepts of classical painting to evoke theatrical qualities and tropes in order to appeal to the viewer’s sense of feeling. Vrijmoet’s style is very fresh and contemporary with scenes depicting subjects floating or swimming in bodies of water. Such a talent of painting water seems unique and might call to mind the works of David Hockney. In this way, the artist  succeeds in reaching the viewer as the synthetic renderings of daylight, water, floating, splashing, coolness, etc., are easily felt and interpreted.

A charismatic name like “Vrijmoet” is like a cult moniker and holds a sense of antiquity and classical association. In the past decade the artist’s work has been featured in several art publications and juried exhibitions by the Met and Guggenheim museums.
